Buddy System’s Carl is like the annoying relative who keeps walking up and asking you how you are. Except this relative is blind and can’t walk very well. Suffice to say that by the end of this puzzle-less map we were thinking of ways to kill him; Chell turned violent and for good reason. And it received second prize on the first mAL contest, seriously.

This map would have been remotely meaningful if Carl helped you through a puzzle, but in reality he just stands around, staggering around the slightest corner, a waste of space and time. His death would be pure natural selection – survival of the fittest, or those who can navigate a simple maze.

Would have been better if the idea of: ‘Carl on one button, me on the other, I shoot a portal through the door and unlock the door for both of us’ type of puzzle. Looks like a ‘run and jump around’ map to me.

That’s exactly what I was after, and what I originally thought the room we are shown Carl in is for – but alas, no such mechanic, just trying to incinerate him.

Hey there. Thanks for reviewing my map. Before I being, I have a couple of little disclaimers (excuses, excuses):
    – I was low on time due to being on vacation in the middle of the contest
    – It was my first work with NPC’s, so definitely not the best it could have been
    – I was trying to meet requirements (with the portalgun and such, I guess I coulda handled that a little better)

    okay now
Carl was supposed to be wearing a jumpsuit (I modified a citizen skin from garrysmod.com, evidently pakrat wasn’t being too friendly)

Oftentimes I wanted to hit carl on the head myself…he is soo annoying

In the chamber area where you meet carl, the wall is a bit discolored, a bit more stained. I might’ve made it a bit more clear, but I suppose I’ve seen worse.

The badly lit elevator is because moving brushes are lit from where they spawn, therefore even if I put a light in it, it would be unrealistically lit. Also the reason I didn’t do a normal elevator was because I was going for a more streamlined, capsule looking contraption that looked as though it would travel far.

So…even though you bashed my map a lot, I actually agree with you on most points. Thanks for the critisism, and I’ll remember not to make stupid NPC’s anymore.

I’m fairly sure that press in ‘C’ will make Carl run to wherever the crosshairs are pointed. Some button does, anyway.
